The Lord of All

From the Desk of Cheryl Hauer

I just came across this short article that I wrote and posted in 2021. I love the story and it seems very appropriate for the world we are living in today.  As individuals, communities, and nations, it seems the tempest is the order of the day. How encouraging to remember that our all-powerful God is Lord over everything, even the storm.

The legend is told of a wealthy landowner who stretched wires between the towers and turrets of his castle complex hoping to create an aeolian harp. It is the only stringed instrument that is played by the wind and he longed to hear the calming, ethereal sounds fill the air around his home. However, even though the breezes blew, no music was born. One evening, a terrible storm approached and as it began to batter the castle, the landowner stepped out onto a balcony to observe its power. His heart leapt as the winds raged and the music of his harp did indeed fill the air, heard even over the fury of the storm. It needed the tempest to become what it was intended to be.

Psalm 66 says, “For You have tried us, O God; You have refined us as silver is refined…We went through fire and through water, yet You brought us out into a place of abundance.” Like the aeolian harp, it is sometimes through the tempest that we find our song.

Blessings and Shalom,
