From the Desk of Cheryl Hauer
Sophie, the Duchess of Wessex, has become an international voice in support of victims of sexual violence in conflict and against the use of rape as a weapon of war. In advance of June 19, which is the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict, I wrote her the following letter:
Your Royal Highness,
Even though I am American, I am a huge fan of the Royal Family, especially you, your husband and children. I believe you are a tremendous asset to your nation and represent the monarchy with grace and elegance. I often pray for you and your family.
I have also been impressed and pleased by your campaign to highlight the plight of victims of sexual violence in conflict. This is a critical issue with global ramifications that, unfortunately, receives precious little attention. Your work on behalf of victims and survivors is truly admirable and sets an example for leaders around the world. Your recent visit to the Imperial War Museum will certainly draw attention to this issue and to the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict on June 19.
I was, however, appalled that the horrendous abuse of Israeli women during Hamas’ invasion of southern Israel on October 7, 2023, and subsequent sexual violence perpetrated against hostages, was totally ignored. Women were raped in front of their husbands and children, young girls in front of their parents, breasts were sliced off and victims raped with such violence their bones were broken. All of this has been documented repeatedly and yet the world remains silent. There is no international outrage and virtually no voices are raised in their support. These women are forced to endure not only the physical and psychological effects of their abuse but also the isolation and humiliation brought on by victim-shaming from the global community.
I believe this egregious neglect undermines the credibility of your otherwise outstanding work. I urge you, Your Highness, to rectify this injustice by raising your most influential voice in support of ALL victims of gender violence. I would respectfully remind you of a statement you made during your visit to the museum: “We must do better.” Indeed, Madam, you must.
Most Sincerely,
Rev. Dr. Cheryl L. Hauer
